Occupational Therapy’s Role
“Occupational therapy services include comprehensive evaluations of the client’s home and other environments (e.g., workplace, school), recommendations for adaptive equipment and training in its use, and guidance and education for family members and caregivers. Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team.”
(American Occupational Therapy Association)
Occupational therapists play a crucial role in home and environmental modifications. As healthcare professionals, occupational therapists provide skilled assessments which determine the interaction of the person and their environment and how it impacts their ability to participate in daily activities, such as self care, leisure, and mobility. This field of practice incorporates function with fit, meaning the entire process is not only focused on necessary changes but how those changes impact the individual and match their expectations.
Occupational therapy takes a proactive approach to independence by identifying potential hazards or barriers to function in the home and community environments. In addition, occupational therapists are trained in the use of adaptive equipment and assistive technology which can enhance the client’s ability to perform their day-to-day activities.
